Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is a highly reactive gas and very toxic in large amounts. This gas is one of the primary causes of acid rain and is the precursor to sulphur trioxide (SO3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO₄). These two biproducts are more corrosive than SO₂. It’s monitoring prevents the damage that can occur to internal process components that will cause the increase in costs and may create unscheduled or unplanned outages. Monitoring the SO₂ / SO3 enables an operator to choose the controlling conditions in order to limit the formation of SO3 and its indirect costs.
